Wildlife
wildlife at la cruz verde
The wildlife at La Cruz Verde are various but all uniquely magnificent,
“Apu”, Howler Monkey (Alouatta Semiculus)
Apu was rescued in Rurrenabaque after a dog attack. He was initially brought into the town as a pet by people who hunted his parents.
Now he is a happy growing baby, climbing in the jungle around the center. Once he becomes an independent adult we hope to reintegrate him fully. This is a complicated task, but his natural habitat is where he belongs.
“Ibo”, Capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris)
Ibu was rescued in the town of Rurrenabaque. He was found alone without parents and without a group. As he was only 1-2 weeks old, this was extremely upsetting. Fortunately, he has adopted fantastically to the centers area, moving and swimming freely. We hope that he will soon find fellow Capybara’s that roam around the center. (He’s no longer in the centre)
“Tiby”, Tapir (Tapirus terrestris)
Tiby is a free living Tapir from the amazon. Being raised in different indigenous communities of the area she has always been free to move where ever she wanted. Unfortunately she is too used to people, this is what we need to change. She is a constant VIP guest of the center, getting hygiene, food and attention (controlled of course!). (She’s no longer in the centre)
“Milo”, Squirrel Monkey (Saimiri boliviensis)
Milo was rescued and he was given to the center by local people. His past remains unknown, but he was very malnourished when he first arrived. Now, he is a strong and tireless young squirrel monkey. We hope to unite him with a free living group of squirrel monkeys close to the center.
“Dagan”, Toucan (Ramphastos toco)
Dagan was also rescued in town, after local authorities called us to take care of the lost Toucan. As his wings are cut off, we assume he was domesticated. Fortunately he managed to hop away from its’ “owners” – having wild animals as pets is illegal!
Now, we he hope to reintegrate him to the natural habitat while his wings re-grow. We are confident he will fly into freedom.
